Estonia is a Baltic state in Northern Europe. The state has two land borders, one with Latvia which runs for 343 km km and the other with Russia which runs for 338 km. After 7 centuries of German, Danish, Swedish, Polish and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it re-gained independence in 1991. With a population of 1.34 million, it is one of the least populated members of the European Union, Eurozone and NATO. The Estonians are a Finnic people, and the official language, Estonian, is closely related to Finnish. The capital and largest city is Tallinn, a World Heritage Site.
