The Kingdom of Denmark is a sovereign state in Northern Europe, and has a population of 5,5 million. Denmark has a land border with Germany which runs for 68 km. The earliest archaeological findings in Denmark date back to the Eem interglacial period from 130,000–110,000 BC. From the 8th to the 10th century, the Danes were known as Vikings (pagan pirates). The earliest description of the origin of the word ‘Denmark’, describing a territory, is found in the Lejrekrøniken (12th century). The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy organised in the form of a parliamentary democracy, with its seat of government in the capital city of Copenhagen.
